Rather than replacing your windows when they become draughty, you’ll be pleased to hear that with the right skills, sash windows can be draught proofed very effectively.

The skilled team at Sash Window Experts has over 30 years of experience repairing, restoring and renovating sash windows all over the South East. We offer a range of services that are designed to keep your period sashes in perfect working order, draught-free and beautiful.

Advantages of Draught Proofing

Did you know that sash windows require a 3mm air gap around the sashes so that they can slide past each other smoothly when you open or close the window? Unfortunately, this air gap is also to blame when it comes to letting in air, resulting in rattling, draughty windows, loss of heat and dust ingress.

Luckily, fitting a discreet draught-proofing system can quickly solve these problems, without compromising the visual appeal of your sash windows. Draught-proofing can be an effective way to deliver the following benefits:

  • Substantial draught reduction
  • Eliminating window rattling
  • Reduced outside noise
  • Smoother window operation

We recently had all of our sash windows double glazed by Sash Window Experts and are very pleased with the whole process. Mark and his team were fantastic from start to finish. They were always on time, polite and incredibly considerate of being in our house. They did a fantastic job of replacing the old Victorian sashes with new double glazed units and we can't recommend them highly enough.

These guys fully deserve their 5 star status, the work that they do is exceptional. Having bought a new period property with windows that were in need of attention we contacted several companies, and chose Sash Window Experts on the basis of Mark’s original survey and quote. Mark showed his love for repair and restoration during the initial visit, and came up with options and solutions to look at windows and doors in our house. Work started on time, and was completed to a very high standard. Given the size of our project we had a variety of people on site at different times, all of whom were a pleasure to have around, and who have that same love for their craft that Mark has. A special shout out to John, who worked with us on a number of things, and always came up with a great solution. We’d highly recommend Sash Window Experts.

Mark, Lisa and their team - Steve, Matt, Ollie and Pete repaired 9 badly decayed sash windows on our Victorian house in a conservation area. The work was finished to high quality, beautifully done and beautifully painted. The team was careful and considerate throughout. They kept to time and came in slightly under the quote value, accounting for elements of the original frames that they were able to repair rather than replace. I would wholeheartedly recommend them for work in a heritage setting.

I cannot praise this company enough. Mark and the entire team, who renovated all the rotten, old and drafty sash windows in our small flat, have been amazing. Gary, Steve and Ollie were, without exception, professional, courteous, great craftsmen and clean and tidy. The quality of the windows, both from the workshop and on site renovations is excellent and the style exactly as the old windows once were. Communication was also easy. I can highly recommend this company. Thanks to all the team.

This is the second time we have used Sash Window Experts, and we went back to them for hardwood double-glazing of our second bay window because we were so pleased with how professionally they worked previously, and the excellent results. They were prompt and attentive as ever - real experts in their field. We're delighted with the standard of their work, and would highly recommend them. The windows look great. Update: We have now (May 2024) used Sash Window Experts for the third time for hardwood double-glazed sash windows for our kitchen and second bedroom, to complete window renovation in our flat. They're as professional as ever, prompt and efficient, clean up well after themselves and the work was completed to a high standard in two days, as they said. We continue to recommend sash Window Experts.

A very professional job, carried out to a high standard. No problems and courteous and pleasant craftsmen. "Did what it says on the tin" Mjb

At Sash Window Experts, our craftsmen can carry out draught proofing as a standalone service or as part of a more comprehensive window renovation project. Why not take a look at our recent draught-proofing projects here?

Rather than filling in the airspace around the sashes – which would make the window harder to open/close – we fill the gap with a soft brush which creates a barrier against incoming air, dust and outgoing heat. It’s a relatively simple improvement to your original windows that can hugely affect your home’s comfort. In addition to creating a cosier and safer home for you and your family, draught proofing also makes your sash windows more efficient which can save you around £50 per year in heating bills.

Unless your sash windows are in excellent overall condition, you may consider having draught proofing included as part of a full window restoration service. This means your window will also benefit from having new sash cords, parting beads and staff beads fitted, and fresh lubrication applied to the pulley wheels. We can also deal with any minor timber defects.

In the old days, many people chose to have their windows painted shut in order to eliminate draught problems. At Sash Window Experts, we can free up the sashes and replace the cords to restore full functionality to your period window. Having installed a quality draught proofing pile, you’ll find that the sash will travel smoothly to allow the window to be opened and closed without friction – just as it did when it was first installed.

Looking After Your Draught-Proofed Sash Windows

Maintaining your refurbished sash windows is not a difficult job. All it takes is a little regular attention to ensure that your windows will give you many years of enjoyment rather than trouble. The most important thing is to clean the draught seals with warm soapy water on a regular basis, so they remain nice and soft, and to ensure they never get painted over by a careless or inexperienced decorator.

If you have a draught-proofing problem with your period sash windows and would like to discuss the issue with one of our expert joiners, or arrange a free window survey and quotation, please email your enquiry or contact Mark at Sash Window Experts at 01403 602701.

Frequently Asked Questions About Draught Proofing

Why are my sash windows draughty?

Sash windows need a small air gap around the sashes so they can slide past each other smoothly when opened and closed. Over time, this gap can allow cold air, dust and outside noise into the room, especially if the windows have become loose or worn.

In many cases, draughty sash windows do not need to be replaced. A discreet draught-proofing system can help seal the gaps while allowing the windows to keep working properly.
